A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are unknown. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 2 to 5 percent of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. A number of organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and images of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.

According to current statistics, 4,000 people in the United States go missing every day. Sometimes a child suddenly vanishes from the bus stop or the local park or even from their own yard or bedroom. Or a teenager doesnt return home after a walk to the neighborhood grocery store or a bike ride or a party with friends. Other times, an adult is mysteriously absent from their job or neighbors havent seen them for several days, and family and friends havent heard from them either.

Markings and/or Distinguishing Characteristics Caucasian female. Red hair, hazel/green eyes. Heimann has a scar on her right knee and leg. She was in a motorcycle accident and had to have a pin surgically inserted in right leg afterwards. Her right leg is shorter than her left leg and she wears a knee brace and limps as a result. She has a large space between her front teeth.
Details of Disappearance Heimann was last seen in Rochester, New York on October 30, 1981. After a drug overdose, she checked herself into the Rochester Psychiatric Center for an evaluation. She said she did not, in fact, need an evaluation, but she was afraid of a man and knew the hospital would have to hold her for 72 hours and she could be safe there. A man allegedly came looking for Heimann on the day she was scheduled to leave the hospital.
On the day of her disappearance, Heimann left the hospital on a four-hour pass, saying she had to go pay her rent. She told a nurse at the hospital she was afraid to come home because the man she was afraid of would be there. She has never been heard from again. She usually took the bus for transportation in 1981.
Since her disappearance she hasn't withdrawn any money from her bank account, but she had very little money in any ; her only income was $250 a month in disability payments. The checks were stopped after her disappearance, because she had failed to claim them.
Authorities initially refused to take a missing persons report; Heimann's mother was not able to report her missing until November 25, nearly a month after her disappearance. Her remains unsolved.
At the time she went missing, Heimann was only months away from obtaining her Ph.D. from the Rochester University School of Medicine.
